The Homecoming A Limited Edition Art Print of George Washington by Michael Gnatek

The year was 1784. George Washington, Commander of the American forces during the recent Revolutionary War, was making a triumphant return to his home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. His main purpose was to visit his elderly mother, Mary Washington, who resided in the town. Washington looked forward to returning to private life at his beloved Mount Vernon, but would soon dutifully return to public life as the nation's first President in 1789. Washington was received at the c. 1763 Town Hall/Market House. An enthusiastic crowd of men, women and children gathered to cheer their hometown hero. Washington was one of the most famous Americans of the time, and his arrival was certainly a milestone in this young town's history. Michael Gnatek, an artist renowned for his depictions of events and people prominent in American history, has captured Washington's visit to Fredericksburg with the rich and vibrant colors that were typical of the period. The 18th century was a time of noble men and women defending their newborn freedoms and these people are represented here with Washington. The home of Mary Washington, an 18th century landmark that still stands today, is also depicted along with the first Town Hall/Market House were Washington was received. The family crest of Washington reminds us of the accomplishments of this great American in a time of unparalleled changed for the New World.
