Napoleon by Michael Gnatek

Wearing his gray overcoat, his distinctive bicorn hat and riding his favorite Arabian horse, Marengo, Napoleon Bonaparte left a mark on the history of France and the world, never to be forgotten. He ushered in the modern age. He codified French law, stabilized its currency, corrected the tax law, improved the educational system and advanced the art of war. Napoleon was born August 15, 1769 in Corsica to lower class noble parents Carlo Buonaparte and Letizia Ramolino. The army had a special allure to Napoleon. He managed to enroll in the military academy of Paris. He had special talents in the art of war and in inspiring confidence in men. Napoleon was a charismatic leader who was both ruthless and hard-working. He became a General at age 24, Emperor of France at age 35, was exiled to St. Helena at age 46 and died at age 52. From the Siege of Toulon that made him a national hero and General, to Waterloo and defeat, Napoleon will never be forgotten.
